In the male dominated industry of engineering, Cal Poly alumna Dana Curran has managed to hold her own. While at Cal Poly, Curran was a member of Tau Beta Pi and Alpha Pi Mu, two engineering honor societies, as well as the Society of Women Engineers. After graduating in 1985 with a degree in Industrial Engineering, she started an environmental compliance company, EM-Assist. EM-Assist provided consulting, energy management, and conservation and planning services among many other resources. After being CEO for over 10 years, she successfully sold the business in 2007 and transitioned to an advisory role on the company’s board of directors. When Curran left EM-Assist in 2012, she transitioned into a Managing Partner Position at ACM Holdings LLC for almost 8 years. Curran is currently a Program Manager at General Dynamics Mission Systems, the business unit of General Dynamics, an aerospace and defense company. With the wide variety of products and services that General Dynamics offers, Curran has adapted her knowledge and expanded on the diversity of her skillset. While holding an impressive and challenging job, Curran manages to stay involved with Cal Poly by serving on the Dean’s advisory council for Industrial Engineering and supporting her daughter, a current Cal Poly student in the College of Engineering.
Despite holding multiple and varied positions, as well as being involved with her alma mater, Curran has still had to face imposter syndrome, a phenomenon familiar to many women in male-dominated industries. Don’t miss the opportunity to hear Dana Curran speak about her experience combatting imposter syndrome at Defining Her Future: A Women in Leadership Conference April 14th in the PAC at her breakout session.
